In today’s economy, we are constantly at fear of layoffs. Since the 2008 market crash, Calgary has been slowly recovering but we are still not in a stable state. Many people have picked up side jobs or hobbies to keep them busy when they aren’t working their 9-5 job. This allows you to build some experience while also bring in some money on the side.

Studies over the past few years have shown that Calgarians have been living paycheck to paycheck. When asked if their paycheck were to be delayed for a week, nearly half of the surveyed population said that it would be difficult to make ends meet. As mentioned earlier, there is still a risk of layoffs from the recent market crash. Relying on a single source of income has become a risky option for many families. This is leading many non-working family members to finding some work and forcing full time workers into picking up a part time job on the side.

Typically, a hobby or a side job would be something that you are interested in and have a real skill in doing. Maybe you have some software skills and can build websites for new businesses, or maybe you like construction work so you can build decks for homeowners. The idea is to take a hobby that you enjoy and foster it into a little side business. The real beauty of this is that soon you can start to make some money on the side with this side business of yours.

Remember, your side job is not your real job. You can use your passion and hard work to make some money that can help supplement your monthly salary. Think about it this way, if you are earning a couple hundred dollars a month, what could you be spending or saving? If the market were to crash again, this side job might be able to help pay the bills or put food on the table.

To help you stay motivated to your side job, put the money towards a cause. Whether that is working towards your student/ personal loan, building savings, or a down payment on a new home.
